Nestled in the Azuma mountain range of Bandai Asahi National Park, Jododaira is a plateau surrounded by lush marshland, alpine flora, and the impressive peaks of Mt. Issaikyo and Mt. Azuma-kofuji. The name ‘Jododaira’ stems from the Buddhist concept of ‘Jodo’ – the Pure Land paradise – a reference to weary travelers gratefully arriving at the peaceful plateau after a taxing journey along the mountain paths. Plentiful variety of alpine flora can be enjoyed between May – September along the many hiking courses on offer. The surrounding area offers relaxing hot springs to soothe tired muscles and delicious local cuisine! 絶景づくしの浄土平エリアに行こう!浄土平は福島県の北側、吾妻連峰の中にある湿原エリア。その中を横切る磐梯吾妻スカイラインは日本の道100選にも選ばれた名道。最高地点の標高は1,622mにもなります。火山噴火によって作られた火山荒原は「火星のよう」とも例えられ、浄土平の北側にそびえる一切経山の山頂から眺める、通称「魔女の瞳」とも呼ばれる神秘的な五色沼など絶景ポイントがたくさんのエリアです。

Being an active volcano, the area boasts a huge variety of mineral-rich hot springs, some with history dating hundreds of years. Mineral-rich soil and distinct seasons also offer blessings of delicious local produce like fresh fruit and unique regional cuisine, including the famous ‘Emban-gyoza’ – tasty dumplings served straight from the pan, still holding its disc-like shape!

Your adventure starts in Fukushima City.
Known for its delicious, high-quality seasonal fruits, Fukushima City is home to many fruit orchards, several of which are located along the ‘Fruits Line’ (Route 5) road. Call-in to an orchard to enjoy some fruit-picking and tasting of whatever is in season, straight off the trees!

Bonsai Workshop at ‘Bonsai-ya Abe’
‘Bonsaiya Abe’ is the studio of third-generation Bonsai craftsman Daiki Abe. Abe-san and his father and grandfather before him replicate the rugged beauty of Jododaira’ s natural environment in the form of stunning bonsai made from ‘Azuma Goyomatsu’ (Japanese white pine) found in the pine forests of Jododaira.
Enjoy a fascinating workshop with Abe-san who will create a bonsai in front of you, explaining what every twist, turn and trim of the pine represents.

「ぼんさいや あべ」は、吾妻山の麓で3代にわたって盆栽を作り続けており、吾妻山の五葉松の景色をお手本とした「空間有美」という作風を表現しながら、浄土平の自然環境の険しい美しさを盆栽によって再現しています。松のねじれ、曲がり、刈り込みそれぞれが何を表しているのかを説明してもらいながら、目の前で盆栽を作る三代目職人阿部大樹さんとの魅力的なワークショップを楽しむことができます。浄土平の雄大な自然を体感する前に、盆栽を通してでその世界観に出会ってください。
Takayu Onsen
Just 15 minutes’ drive from Bonsai-ya Abe is one of Fukushima’ s most popular hot-spring villages, ‘Takayu Onsen’ .
Takayu Onsen is a picturesque hot spring village located on a plateau in the Azuma mountain range of Fukushima. Takayu’ s hot-spring waters are known for their healing properties as well as stunning milky-green hues. The town is located just a 20-minute drive from the Jododaira Visitor Centre and is a popular spot for hikers and visitors after a day of hiking or exploring the area. There are several ryokan inns located in the town that offer the perfect oasis for an overnight stay, and several also welcome day visitors, with a popular option being the ‘Attakayu’ public bath house.
高湯温泉
高湯温泉は、福島の吾妻連峰の高原に位置し、湯治場の雰囲気が残る美しい温泉地です。高湯の温泉は、高い癒し効果と乳白色の見事な色合いで知られています。浄土平ビジターセンターから車で約20分の場所にあり、ハイキングや散策を楽しんだ後に楽しめる場としてハイカーや観光客に人気のスポットです。温泉街には日帰りで入浴できる温泉旅館もいくつかあり、人気の選択肢は「高湯温泉共同浴場あったか湯」です。

Jododaira Stargazing
After a delicious local dinner at your accommodation in Takayu Onsen, journey up the mountain to gaze at the incredible starry skies! With very little light pollution, some evenings it is possible to see the milky-way with the naked eye! Enjoy a cup of hot-wine or cocoa as you ‘space-out’ in the darkness.
*Please note: the ‘Bandai-Azuma Skyline’ road between Takayu and Jododaira is periodically closed at nighttime. Please be sure to check updated information and warnings before departure.
浄土平星空ツアー(ナイトプログラム①)
夕食後、天気の良い夜には磐梯吾妻スカイラインを登って浄土平の星空を眺めましょう!空気が清浄で光害がほとんどなく、天の川を肉眼で眺めることもできます。

Morning coffee at Takayu Fudo Falls
Along with hot springs, there are other ways to enjoy the water of Takayu, including Takayu Fudo Falls – an impressive waterfall located just a short 20 minute walk from the town area. A hiking trail will take you right to the foot of the falls and the perfect spot for a morning coffee break!
高湯不動滝でモーニングコーヒー
温泉を楽しんだ翌朝は、20分ほどの散策でたどり着く滝があります。滝壺まで行くことができるので、朝の散歩がてらモーニングコーヒーを楽しんではいかがでしょうか。
Mt. Issaikyo & The Witch’s Eye
Driving up the mountain from Takayu Onsen, you’ ll soon arrive at Jododaira Visitor Centre. Orientate yourself with the wealth of information on display and choose which of the hiking course(s) you’ d like to explore.
Just 90 minutes from the visitor centre is Mt. Issaikyo, an active volcano. As you walk to the summit, observe the wild Japanese White Pine that are inspiration for the bonsai you encountered the day before with Abe-san. From the peak of Mt. Issaikyo look out over ‘Goshikinuma’ (five-coloured pond) also known as the ‘Witch’ s Eye’ for its entrancing deep-blue hues.
一切経山&魔女の瞳
高湯温泉から車で磐梯吾妻スカイラインを登り、浄土平ビジターセンターに到着。展示されている豊富な情報から、探索したいハイキングコースを選択してください。
ビジターセンターから約1時間半ほどのところに一切経山という活火山があります。頂上まで歩いていくと、前日に阿部さんのところで見た盆栽のインスピレーションとなった野生の五葉松を観察できます。一切経山の山頂からは、コバルトブルーの色合いが魅力的な「魔女の瞳」で知られる「五色沼」を見渡せます。
Kamanuma Pond
This route is a great addition to the Mt. Issaikyo course. Take a walk along the raised-platform paths that wind their way across marshland and fields of alpine flowers and plants. This will add an extra 1.5-2 hours to your journey back to the Jododaira Visitor centre.
鎌沼
この自然探勝路は、木道が整備されており高山植物やミズゴケ類、美しい水をたたえた鎌沼、低層湿原の様相を見せる酸ヶ平など見どころも多いエリアです。
浄土平ビジターセンターから約1時間半~2時間で巡ることができるハイキングコースです。
Mt. Azuma-Kofuji (Little Mt. Fuji)
One of the more dramatic yet accessible courses is the hike around the parameter of the crater of Mt. Azuma-Kofuji, known for its conical shape that resembles a small Mt. Fuji. The crater itself is located only a short 15 minute walk at some steps from the Jododaira Visitor centre, and it takes roughly an hour to walk the remainder of the course around the parameter.
吾妻小富士
よりダイナミックでアクセスしやすいコースの1つは、火口壁をぐるりと一周するハイキングです。火口の眺めは圧巻。吾妻小富士は秀麗な小型の富士山を思わせ、地元の人々にも古くから親しまれている名山です。浄土平ビジターセンターから一周約1時間ほどの初級者向けのハイキングコースです。
Tsuchiyu Onsen:
A picturesque hot-spring town boasting over 1000 years of history, Tsuchiyu Onsen is a definite highlight of the Jododaira area. As you approach the town, you’ ll be greeted by a giant ‘Kokeshi Doll’ ; a local craft famous throughout the hot spring towns of northern Japan. After checking-in to your accommodation, take a stroll through the quiet streets, perhaps dropping-in to a Kokeshi Doll workshop to try hand-painting your own or relaxing in one of the many public outdoor foot-spas located throughout the town.

Spend the evening eating and drinking like a local at some of the atmospheric bars and restaurants dotted around town, stopping in between for a dip in some of the four outdoor foot-spas! There’ s nothing quite like sitting with your bare feet in the hot spring water, soaking up (literally!) views of the bath houses along the river as you sip a bottle of local craft beer, sake or even a hot cup of ‘amazake’ ! Once you’ ve worked up an appetite, drop-in to crowd favourite ‘Hisago’ for a delectable meal of local cuisine and soba noodles, but make sure you save room for the famous ‘Curry Emban-gyoza’ dumplings at ‘Miraku’ ! (Vegetarian dumplings also available!)

Hike Mt. Adatara with the guardians of Dake Onsen
Hiking up Mt. Adatara is in and of itself a rewarding experience, but taking the journey alongside a ‘Yumori’ – one of the local men charged with protecting the source of the hot springs – is the only way to truly uncover the secrets of the mountain. Even in the height of winter, the ‘Yumori’ trek over eight kilometres into the mountains through metres of snowfall once a week to release the build-up of minerals at the source of the hot-spring, ensuring a steady stream of ‘milky’ hot spring water fills the baths of the Ryokan inns that support the livelihood of Dake Onsen.
Self-guided hiking courses at Mt. Adatara range anywhere between half-day and full day courses. The Yumori-guided course takes around eight hours in total.
Whichever route you take, be sure to budget enough time to reward your weary muscles with a soak in the public baths at Dake Onsen and/or a feed of delicious local specialty ‘Sauce-katsu-don’ (pork cutlet in a sweet sauce on rice) at ‘Narikoma’ .
岳温泉の湯守と行く安達太良山ハイキング
安達太良山ハイキングは良い体験ですが、温泉の源泉を守り続ける地元の「湯守」と一緒に周ることで、この地域の山の秘密を知ることができます。真冬でも、「湯守」は週に一度、数メートル近く積もる雪をかき分けながら8キロ以上移動し、温泉の源泉に溜まった湯花を落とす作業を行いながら温泉の「乳白色」の湯の安定した流れを確保します。その湯脈こそが岳温泉の生計を支える各旅館の温泉に繋がっているのです。
安達太良山のセルフガイドハイキングコースは半日または終日のコース、どちらも選択可能ですが、湯守ガイドコースは約8時間かかります。どちらのルートを選んだ場合でも、岳温泉の温泉に浸かったり、地元の名物グルメや温泉街の散策を楽しんだりする時間を確保して疲れた筋肉をいたわってください。

DAY ONE
(1日目)
‘Extreme Onsen’ experience!
Grab a towel and be prepared to have your mind and any previous conceptions of Japanese hot-springs blown-away! Numajiri-motoyu hot-springs are said to be the most plentiful springs in Japan, with over 13,400L of mineral-rich spring water gushing out of the source every minute!! The source of the spring is located behind Mt. Adatara, accessible by hiking through the Numajiri Highlands with a local guide. Enjoy incredible views over the mountain range to Mt. Bandai and the dramatic ‘Shirotaki Falls’ as the sulfuric smell of the hot-springs gets stronger and stronger. Soon you’ ll stumble across an incredible milky-blue river of hot-spring water making its way down the mountain. First, stop to take-in the dynamic sight of the source itself, with gushing water, steam plumes and build-ups of sulfur and minerals creating an other-worldly landscape! Find a scenic spot along the river and take off your shoes – your own private outdoor foot-spa awaits! Or, if the temperature of the water isn’ t too hot (it varies from day-to-day), strip down and jump straight in!! This is an ‘extreme’ onsen experience you’ ll never experience anywhere else!
中ノ沢・沼尻エクストリーム温泉体験
タオルを持って、あなたの心と日本の温泉の以前の概念を吹き飛ばす準備をしてください!沼尻元湯は日本一湧出量が豊富な温泉とも言われ、毎分13,400L以上のミネラル豊富な温泉が湧き出ています!源泉は安達太良山の噴火口近くや谷間から湧く「沼尻元湯」にあり、地元のガイドと一緒に沼尻高原を歩いて安達太良山に行けます。山脈から山までの素晴らしい景色をお楽しみください。温泉までの道中では、温泉の滝(白糸の滝)や洞窟の中を温泉が流れる洞窟温泉も見ることが出来、源泉に到達するまでの間も楽しめます。景色の良いところでは靴を脱いでの足湯体験もでき、温泉の温度がそれほど高くない場合には、服を脱いでの野天風呂入浴も体験できます。

Adatara, you’ ll arrive at the picturesque hot-spring village of Dake Onsen. Check-in to your lodging at Mt. Inn and relax before the next adventure begins when the sun goes down...!

After a relaxed morning, it’ s time to up the excitement with a thrilling off-road biking tour of Dake Onsen! Begin with a safety lecture and practice before following your guide to some of the most scenic views of the Adatara highlands. For those brave enough, switch gears and head off-road for a heart-racing adventure along a mountain trail.

Kokeshi Doll painting in Tsuchiyu Onsen
Along with many hot-spring villages across northern Japan, Tsuchiyu Onsen is famous for producing wooden Kokeshi Dolls painted with a distinctive design. Visitors can learn more about the dolls and their history at the Tsuchiyu Kokeshi Denshokan, before calling-in to one of the local workshops to try their hand at painting their own! Whether painting in the traditional style of Tsuchiyu Onsen or unleashing your creative genius and going freestyle, you’ re sure to end up with a beautiful memento of your stay at Tsuchiyu Onsen.

Driving up the mountain from Takayu Onsen, you’ ll soon arrive at Jododaira Visitor Centre. Orientate yourself with the wealth of information on display and choose which of the hiking course(s) you’ d like to explore.
Just 90 minutes from the visitor centre is Mt. Issaikyo, an active volcano. As you walk to the summit, observe the wild Japanese White Pine that are inspiration for the bonsai you encountered the day before with Abe-san. From the peak of Mt. Issaikyo look out over ‘Goshikinuma’ (five-coloured pond) also known as the ‘Witch’ s Eye’ for its entrancing deep-blue hues.
一切経山&魔女の瞳
高湯温泉から車で磐梯吾妻スカイラインを登り、浄土平ビジターセンターに到着。展示されている豊富な情報から、探索したいハイキングコースを選択してください。
ビジターセンターから約1時間半ほどのところに一切経山という活火山があります。頂上まで歩いていくと、前日に阿部さんのところで見た盆栽のインスピレーションとなった野生の五葉松を観察できます。一切経山の山頂からは、コバルトブルーの色合いが魅力的な「魔女の瞳」で知られる「五色沼」を見渡せます。
Kamanuma Pond
This route is a great addition to the Mt. Issaikyo course. Take a walk along the raised-platform paths that wind their way across marshland and fields of alpine flowers and plants. This will add an extra 1.5-2 hours to your journey back to the Jododaira Visitor centre.
鎌沼
この自然探勝路は、木道が整備されており高山植物やミズゴケ類、美しい水をたたえた鎌沼、低層湿原の様相を見せる酸ヶ平など見どころも多いエリアです。浄土平ビジターセンターから約1時間半~2時間で巡ることができるハイキングコースです。
Mt. Azuma-Kofuji (Little Mt. Fuji)
One of the more dramatic yet accessible courses is the hike around the parameter of the crater of Mt. Azuma-Kofuji, known for its conical shape that resembles a small Mt. Fuji. The crater itself is located only a short 15 minute walk at some steps from the Jododaira Visitor centre, and it takes roughly an hour to walk the remainder of the course around the parameter.
吾妻小富士
よりダイナミックでアクセスしやすいコースの1つは、火口壁をぐるりと一周するハイキングです。火口の眺めは圧巻。吾妻小富士は秀麗な小型の富士山を思わせ、地元の人々にも古くから親しまれている名山です。浄土平ビジターセンターから一周約1時間ほどの初級者向けのハイキングコースです。
A Final Hot-spring for the Road!
After an active day, reward your tired muscles with a soak in the healing green-white mineral waters of Takayu Onsen, just a 20-minute drive down the mountain from Jododaira Visitor centre. There are several hot-spring inns that welcome day visitors to use their baths, with a popular option being the ‘Attakayu’ public bath house.
Feeling replenished, make your way back towards Fukushima Station, perhaps stopping along the famous ‘Fruits Line’ (Route 5) road. Call-in to a local orchard to enjoy some fruit-picking and tasting of whatever is in season, straight off the trees!
高湯温泉 入浴
活動的な一日を過ごした後は、高湯温泉の癒しの乳白色のお湯に浸って、疲れた筋肉にを労りましょう。満ち足りた気分で福島駅に戻り、果物で有名な「フルーツライン」(県道5号線)に寄り道するのもおすすめです。新鮮な季節の果物狩りを楽しむことができます。
